What are the benefits of senna leaves?

If you’re an avid herbal tea drinker you’ve likely come across senna leaves or senna fruits in the list of herbal tea ingredients. Where does this senna plant grow? What does the senna plant look like? Finally, why can it be found in many herbal teas?
Wild Senna Plants
The beautiful bush has bright yellow flowers and grows 3 to 5 feet in height depending on the climate and soil quality. The senna plant can thrive in the wild and does well in moist soils.
Benefits and Effects of Wild Senna leaves
In history, the senna alexandrina leaf and senna pod leaves was used in herbal teas as a laxative. This was well documented in James A. Duke’s Handbook of medicinal herbs (1929). In Canada and the United States of America, senna is recognized by the FDA & Health Canada as an ingredient for the treatment of occasional constipation by increasing the frequency of bowel movements giving quick acting relief. This is the reason why many will drink senna tea to detox or for to relieve occasional constipation.
Senna is one of the plants with a high level of anthraquinones which are thought to increase the amount of fluid in the colon and their capacities to stimulate colon contractions.
Should you drink tea with senna leaves at night?
Laxative effect could take 6 to 12 hours and therefore Health Canada does recommend taking senna leaves tea prior to hitting the pillow at night.
Drinking senna leaves tea will not affect your sleep, as long as there are no ingredients containing caffeine in your tea.
How much senna tea should you drink?
Senna appears as a monograph in the Natural Health Products Ingredient Database of Health Canada. If taken orally they recommend a dosage of once (1) per day. Senna leaves can be great to provide occasional relief but it is recommend taking 2 to 3 times per week and that if problems persist beyond 7 days to consult a health care professional if require.
